Stony Brook University and Enterprise Rent-A-Car Launch WeCar Car-Sharing Program for Students, Faculty and Staff

WeCar by Enterprise Rent-A-Car helps remove cars from the road, reduce pollution and enhance Stony Brook University’s sustainable operations

February 21, 2011 (STONY BROOK, NY) – Stony Brook University and WeCar by Enterprise Rent-A-Car have partnered to provide a cost-effective and convenient car-sharing solution to students, faculty and staff. WeCar offers registered members access to three Nissan Altima hybrids on the Stony Brook University campus. The vehicles will be parked and available at The West Apartments and the Campus Residents Offices at Mendelsohn Quad.

WeCar is an automated, membership-based car-sharing program that provides Stony Brook University students (18 and older), faculty and staff with an environmentally friendly transportation solution that helps remove vehicles from the road to reduce emissions and traffic. Members have 24-hour access to the vehicles and can reserve them online at any time. The cars can be rented hourly, overnight or for a full day, allowing members to maintain the benefits of a personal car while only paying for the vehicle when they use it.

WeCar’s on-campus program is popular with students because it provides a solution to car rental age restrictions and eliminates financial concerns associated with having a car on campus. For faculty and staff, WeCar car sharing offers a transportation alternative for personal and business use.

“We anticipate that resident students will utilize this service rather than bring their own car to campus, which will reduce campus vehicle congestion as well as our environmental footprint,” said Angela Agnello, director of marketing and communications, Faculty Student Association at Stony Brook University.

WeCar’s automated car rental programs in the United States are supported by local Enterprise Rent-A-Car business rental programs, and by Enterprise Rent-A-Car’s vast network of more than 5,000 neighborhood car rental branches located within 15 miles of 90 percent of the U.S. population. WeCar complements Rideshare by Enterprise Rent-A-Car, a vanpool program for groups and individuals at large work sites or in concentrated areas with multiple employers.

“WeCar allows Stony Brook University to enhance its transportation operations and sustainability initiatives with a cost-effective, convenient car-sharing alternative to personal vehicle ownership,” said Bob Friedman, director of business rental, Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

As part of Enterprise’s strong recruiting presence on campus, WeCar has recruited a student for its WeCar Brand Ambassador internship program on the Stony Brook University campus. The WeCar Brand Ambassador will conduct on-campus marketing activities to raise awareness of WeCar and increase program membership. The paid internship program is active on nearly 20 college and university campuses where WeCar operates in the United States.

WeCar operates customized car-sharing programs throughout the United States, Canada and the UK. Enterprise currently provides WeCar car-sharing programs for corporate campuses, universities and municipal governments in 17 states.
